If 10,000 people were killed every month would it be news?

The Center for American Progress launched the “Be A Witness” campaign today, with a TV ad produced by julianmulvey.com.

Calling attention to the lack of media coverage of the genocide in Darfur, the spot is a montage of television clips featuring the mainstream news media’s fixation with all things Michael Jackson, “Runaway Bride,” and “TomKat.”

But when over 2 million people - husbands, wives, children, parents - have been forced from their homes, and nearly 400,000 of them killed, are we just amusing ourselves to death while the news does not focus attention on the genocide?

Be a Witness” asks viewers to send a simple message to the media: Be a witness to the genocide.

Genocide trumps everything. All other politics. All other news. Activists from the left and right must come together to pressure the media to focus on the atrocities occurring right now in Darfur. You can’t stop a genocide if you don’t know about it, and “never again” becomes once again,” said Julian Mulvey.
